LET US ALWAYS REMEMBER
Jesus knew…
On that last night of His life, Jesus knew… He knew this was the last night of His life.
He knew the paths each of the disciples had walked down… everything they had walked through, not only in their lives but also on the road that very day. He knew they were each covered in sin and all varieties of unmentionable filth. And STILL He humbled Himself to the lowliest position, to wash each of their feet. And SO He humbled Himself and washed them. All of them. Even Judas.
He knew all of these feet would soon be running…
Running to betray Him…
Running away in fear and abandoning Him…
Running away in shame after denying Him…
And still… and SO… He humbled Himself to the lowliest position, to wash each of their feet. ALL of them. And He knew that they could not understand this now…
Jesus knew that His body would be broken. He knew that His blood would be poured out. He knew that it was IMPERATIVE that they ALL remember this… not only WHAT He was doing, but for WHOM. For everyone.
And so He gave them a reminder, something to help them to remember. He took the bread and broke it… and passed it around to them. All of them. Even Judas. He took the wine and passed it around to them. All of them. Even Judas. And He told them ALL to remember… He was doing this for them. All of them.
Even those who would betray Him.
Even those who would abandon Him.
Even those who would deny Him.
And so WE do this not only to remember WHAT Jesus did, but for WHOM He did it. He did it for everyone.
We ALL have walked down dusty, dirty, filthy roads in our lives, and yet He came to wash us clean. Even though He knew. We all have run away, and betrayed, and abandoned, and denied Him at some time or another in our lives. And so He IMPLORES us to remember…
All of the disciples were there at this last supper – at this teaching. Even Judas. All of the disciples eventually returned to Jesus. All EXCEPT for Judas. Perhaps Judas just didn’t remember this teaching…
Jesus knew how important it was for us to remember… so we would return to Him.
Let us always remember… what Jesus did, and for whom Jesus did it. For everyone. Even me. Even you.
Let us always remember… and always return to Him.
In Jesus' name.
Amen.
